Takotsubo cardiomyopathy: a new form of acute, reversible heart failure.

چکیده
Several relatively recent case reports and series have described a condition featuring symptoms and signs of acute myocardial infarction without demonstrable coronary artery stenosis or spasm in which the heart takes on the appearance of a Japanese octopus fishing pot called a takotsubo (Figure 1). In takotsubo cardiomyopathy (also called transient apical ballooning and stress cardiomyopathy), left ventricular dysfunction, which can be remarkably depressed, recovers within a few weeks.1–4 Takotsubo cardiomyopathy occurs predominantly in postmenopausal women soon after exposure to sudden, unexpected emotional or physical stress. For instance, the incidence of takotsubo cardiomyopathy increased substantially in elderly women living near the epicenter of the Niigata earthquake.4 Although the left ventricular dysfunction is transient and there is no evidence of obstructive epicardial coronary disease, an increasing number of angioplasty procedures have been performed for presumed acute coronary syndromes. Concepts about the demographics, clinical features, prognosis, and management of this reversible form of left ventricular failure are still evolving. In this brief review, we summarize recent clinical reports and discuss an animal model that may clarify the pathogenesis of this condition.

Recently, many reports have been published about apical ballooning or takotsubo cardiomyopathy. This disease is a new entity of acute reversible heart failure. Abnormal catecholamine dynamics due to stress may be the primary cause of this condition.

broken heart classically refers to an emotional state caused by psychological pain. Current research indicates that a broken heart is a true medical condition, not just a play on words. Broken heart syndrome is due to an exaggerated sympathetic response to stress that causes a severe but reversible left ventricular failure. Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is a reversible left ventricular dysfunction t...

A patient with squamous cell carcinoma on the left mandible presented with symptoms similar to acute coronary syndrome just after surgery. The exact etiology was unclear, but following transthoracic echocardiogram, takotsubo cardiomyopathy was diagnosed. This is a rare, acute, and reversible form of heart failure, and the patient recovered completely within weeks. Related risk factors are belie...

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is increasingly being diagnosed as a cause of acute coronary syndrome in postmenopausal women. It may also present as reversible acute left heart failure with an excellent prognosis for recovery. Although rare, it may be an underdiagnosed condition in the medical intensive care units among patients admitted with non-cardiac acute conditions. Therefore, intensivists must...
متن کاملTakotsubo cardiomyopathy in a patient with esophageal cancer: a case report
INTRODUCTION Takotsubo cardiomyopathy has increasingly been reported in the medical literature in recent years. Much is still unknown regarding risk factors and clinical relationships. We contribute this case report to the growing set of literature on the topic. CASE PRESENTATION We report the case of a 64-year-old woman with esophageal cancer who developed takotsubo cardiomyopathy, a form of...
